All instruments, but especially percussion and  wind instruments, contain two features that give you

unlimited expressive potential: speech (song) and movement (dance).

While the voice may well be the instrument closest to perfection, the drums are not far behind as the

next most powerful mode of communication - as the great jazz musician Art Blakey always said.

When Art Blakey, Papa Joe Jones or Bernard Purdie play the drums, or when Roy Eldridge, Lee Morgan

or Roy Hargrove play the trumpet, you can see what this means. You have the impression that they’re

singing and dancing at one and the same time. It’s something wholly organic, something that you

yourself want to do as you play the drums. And you have to do it with such spirit and energy that,

whenever you play, you manage to convey the thrill to those that are listening to you.

That, I guess, is what the drummers aims for.

Σε όλα τα όργανα, ιδιαίτερα όμως στα κρουστά και τα πνευστά, υπάρχουν δύο στοιχεία που σου

δίνουν ανεξάντλητες εκφραστικές δυνατότητες: η ομιλία (τραγούδι) και η κίνηση (χορός). 

Η φωνή είναι το τελειότερο όργανο. Ο μεγάλος  Art Blakey έλεγε ότι τα ντράμς είναι το ισχυρότερο

μέσο επικοινωνίας μετά την ανθρώπινη φωνή.  Όταν ο Art Blakey, ο Papa Joe Jones, ο Bernard Purdie

παίζουν ντράμς ή όταν ο Roy Eldridge, ο Lee Morgan,  ο Roy Hargrove παίζουν τρομπέτα καταλαβαίνεις

περί τίνος πρόκειται. Νοιώθεις ότι χορεύουν και τραγουδούν ταυτόχρονα. Είναι κάτι τελείως οργανικό,

κάτι που εσύ ο ίδιος θέλεις να κάνεις παίζοντας ντράμς. Και πρέπει να το κάνεις τόσο  πολύ, που να

μεταδοθεί σ’ όποιους σε ακούν κάθε φορά.

Αυτός είναι άλλωστε και ο στόχος ενός ντράμερ.
